Six people recall the languages that cradled their childhoods: Judeo-Spanish or Judeo Arabic, or Judeo-Persian. Today, the languages themselves are dying but they left traces that still work on those who heard them as children.

Seven young people share their love for Yiddish avant-garde poetry written during the interwar period - a period that saw a huge outbreak of Yiddish culture and creativity. The poetry written was both personal and universal, closely aligned with the art movements of the time. The seven participants in the film, some of them Jewish and some not, move and live between different countries and languages. Each tells of their connection to Yiddish and to a poet or poetess close to their heart. For them, this poetry belongs not only to the Jewish past but speaks also to the present.

Signer
Director: Nurith Aviv

2018
In her documentary film, SIGNER, Nurith Aviv ventures into the relatively uncharted territory of sign languages. These languages are numerous and diverse, each with its own grammar and syntax, its unique richness and complexity.
Three generations of protagonists, both deaf and hearing, as well as researchers from The Sign Language Research Laboratory at The University of Haifa, talk about the sign languages that have evolved in Israel within the past 100 years. In this new work, Nurith Aviv continues to explore issues close to her heart: a mother tongue, translation, and intergenerational transmission.
In doing so, she invites us to broaden our perception of human languages.
